Why You Shouldn't Feel Rushed In Your 20's

Ah, the 20's. Some friends have their own families, others a well rounded and well paying job. Some still in school and others not even started. And yet, "You are an adult!!". Well I don't know about you, but I still feel like a confused teen stumbling around not knowing what the F is going on.

I often catch myself thinking thoughts along the lines of: Why do I not have 100k in my bank account already, Why do I not own my own house yet, I should be ashamed I am still in education and not in a full time job, Why have I not travelled the world, Am I behind?

Am I behind?

The truth is, No.

I truly believe, even though it's hard to remind myself, that at any point in time you are where you need to be right in that moment, or else you wouldn't be.

It's comparison isn't it? Comparing yourself to that friend who owns their house, or the other friend who got their degree in two years, or to the friend who didn't go to uni and has a full time well paying job since their teens. The thing is, that's them. Not you.

If you started running your race when your horn rang, yet your friend is further along in their race - have you asked yourself when their horn rang?

What I am trying to say is, do not compare your chapter 1 to someone else's chapter 20.

It's so easy to look at your bank account and feel like shit. Or to think how ever many years it is going to take you to build your career. But why are you worried about the time? Why are you worried that you aren't going to do it in 2 years? Didn't Miley Cyrus once say, "It's the Climb"?? Stop wishing away your 20's feeling rubbish that you aren't "There" yet. You are Here now. Stop rushing.

And this is what I need to tell myself. What sparked this blog post? Well I was moving my money into my savings, preparing for when my student loans come through. I started thinking about my friend starting a job that is paying her around £27k. And I thought, I am not going to see that sort of money for a long, long time. It made me feel like shit. It made me stress so much that I started looking at web extensions that help you earn money while doing your normal work. I totally downloaded one.

So I am with you. I feel those feelings of regret, the what if's and but's. I have those thoughts of "well, shit. I am a failure." But ultimately, they are not rational.

We live in a society that if you are not a high fly earner with great grades by the time you're 18, you have failed.

Which, if it wasn't obvious - is NOT true.

sigh.

Your 20's are hard. They are confusing. They are stressful. But, they are also fun, freeing and bloody hilarious.

I have no clue what I am doing. I have no clue how I will buy myself my dream £600k home, finish my degree, start a business AND travel the world. All I do know, is I will get there.

It's The Climb.

Gosh damn, Miley really hit the nail on the head with that one didn't she.

Be kind to yourself.

See you soon,

Bethany xxx
